Republican Jenny Rae Le Roux, a second cousin of Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, announced Thursday that she is running for the U.S. House in California's 47th Congressional District, a competitive Orange County seat currently held by first-term Democratic Rep. Dave Min.

Le Roux is one of four Republican candidates competing in the June 2 primary to challenge Min, whom she characterizes as having campaigned as a moderate but governing as a progressive. The district includes Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Newport Beach and Seal Beach.

What the Left Is Saying

Progressive critics have dismissed Le Roux's candidacy as an extension of family political rivalry rather than a substantive policy campaign. Le Roux acknowledged her relationship with Spanberger while emphasizing their political disagreements.

"She really ran as a moderate in Virginia and is governing as a progressive, which I think is disenfranchising a lot of Democrat voters," Le Roux said of her cousin.

Le Roux's characterization mirrors conservative attacks on Spanberger's governance since she took office as Virginia's first female governor. However, progressive advocates argue that Spanberger's policy positions reflect the will of Virginia voters who elected her.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and local progressive organizations have not yet responded to Le Roux's candidacy, though the race is expected to draw significant national attention given the district's competitiveness.

What the Right Is Saying

Le Roux, an entrepreneur who ran for California governor in both the 2021 recall election and the 2022 gubernatorial race, frames her campaign as a response to failed Democratic policies on education, homelessness and crime.

"A lot of my district is actually not that interested in progressive politics. They want schools that work, roads that operate, police that show up. They want the basic functioning of a governmental society that works," Le Roux said.

The National Republican Congressional Committee has targeted the 47th District as part of its strategy to protect the GOP's razor-thin House majority in the 2026 midterm elections. Le Roux joins a crowded Republican primary field.

Le Roux currently serves as director of CAL DOGE, an initiative launched by former Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton to identify government waste and fraud. She cited her work with the organization as motivation for her congressional run.

"Cal DOGE has been eye opening. Washington enables the same dysfunction and corruption that is hurting California. We can't fix what is broken in our government unless outsiders who haven't been part of the problem step up to serve," Le Roux said.

What the Numbers Show

California's 47th Congressional District is considered a toss-up seat that Democrats flipped in 2022 when Dave Min succeeded former Democratic Rep. Katie Porter. The district voted for President Joe Biden in 2020, making it a priority target for both parties.

Le Roux placed fourth in the 2022 California Republican gubernatorial primary, receiving approximately 4% of the vote. The winner, Gov. Gavin Newsom, easily won re-election in the general election.

The June 2 primary will determine whether Le Roux advances to face Min in what is expected to be one of the most expensive House races of 2026. National Republican groups have already begun investing in the district.

The Bottom Line

The Spanberger-Le Roux race represents an unusual family political dynamic, with two second cousins running on opposite sides of the political spectrum in different states. Both have framed their campaigns as responsive to voters who feel disconnected from their representatives' governance.

The 47th District race will test whether Republican voters in affluent Orange County suburbs remain supportive of Min's moderate brand or shift toward the conservative alternatives. Le Roux's ability to differentiate herself in a crowded primary will be critical to her general election prospects.

The race is expected to draw significant national campaign spending from both parties, making it one of the most competitive House contests in the 2026 midterm elections.
