Milli Vanilli and Morris Day Say They Won't Perform at Trump-Linked Freedom 250's DC Shows

The performers were listed among the first wave announced for 'The Great American State Fair' on the National Mall, but both artists say they were never asked to participate.

⚡ The Bottom Line

The withdrawals highlight ongoing tensions between Trump's political operations and the entertainment industry. A Freedom 250 spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment as of publication time. What happens next: Freedom 250 will need to find replacement performers for the affected dates or clarify the circumstances under which these artists were listed without their knowledge.

Freedom 250, a President Donald Trump-affiliated organization celebrating America's 250th anniversary, announced the first wave of performers for "The Great American State Fair" shows on Washington's National Mall scheduled for June 25 through July 10. Among those listed were Milli Vanilli, Morris Day and Young MC.

Within 24 hours of the announcement, all three artists had publicly stated they would not be performing at the event. Freedom 250 describes itself as a "national, non-partisan organization leading the celebration of our Nation's 250th birthday." Trump appointed Keith Krach, who served as under secretary of state during Trump's first term, as the organization's CEO.

What the Left Is Saying

Progressive critics have pointed to this incident as evidence that the Freedom 250 event is more politically charged than its organizers claim. The artists' swift rejection aligns with a broader pattern of musicians distancing themselves from Trump-affiliated events.

Trump and his supporters have long had a contentious relationship with the music community. Celine Dion, Elton John and Guns N' Roses are among the many artists who have objected to their music being played at Trump rallies over the years.

Jodie Rocco, singer for Milli Vanilli, said in an email to The Associated Press that neither she, her sister Linda Rocco nor any other group members had been asked to participate. "My sister and I were shocked to see our name, 'Milli Vanilli', as one of the performers," she wrote.

What the Right Is Saying

Supporters of Freedom 250 have emphasized the non-partisan framing of the organization. The group's stated mission is celebrating America's 250th birthday, and organizers maintain the event is meant to bring Americans together regardless of political affiliation.

Young MC, whose real name is Marvin Young, issued a statement on Instagram acknowledging he was listed but questioning whether the National Mall shows would truly be nonpartisan. "The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event," he wrote. He added that he hoped to "perform in D.C. in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged."

Morris Day posted on Instagram: "Contrary to rumor, Morris Day & The Time will not be performing at the 'GREAT AMERICAN STATE FAIR."

What the Numbers Show

At least one artist from the originally announced lineup has confirmed participation. Vanilla Ice's representatives told the AP he is committed to performing. "He is proud to help celebrate America's 250th Anniversary!" a representative wrote, adding: "Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate USA's Birthday and our Freedom!"

Other performers still listed for The Great American State Fair include the Commodores, Flo Rida and Martina McBride. Milli Vanilli was scheduled to appear at an "I Love the 90s" concert on June 26, with Morris Day listed for June 27.

The Bottom Line

The withdrawals highlight ongoing tensions between Trump's political operations and the entertainment industry. A Freedom 250 spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment as of publication time.

What happens next: Freedom 250 will need to find replacement performers for the affected dates or clarify the circumstances under which these artists were listed without their knowledge.
