Peggy Flanagan Wins Minnesota Democratic Senate Primary, Setting up November Showdown With Michele Tafoya

Flanagan defeated Rep. Angie Craig in Tuesday's primary, but her role in the state's unemployment fraud scandal has emerged as a central issue in the general election race.

Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan won Minnesota's Democratic Senate primary on Tuesday, defeating Rep. Angie Craig and securing the party's nomination in a race that has placed the state's unemployment fraud scandal at the center of the fall campaign.

Flanagan will face Republican nominee Michele Tafoya in November in what Republicans are calling one of their best opportunities to win a Senate seat in Minnesota since 2009.

What the Right Is Saying

Tafoya, the former NFL sideline reporter who won the Republican primary, has made accountability for the fraud scandal a centerpiece of her campaign against Flanagan. Shortly after securing the GOP nomination, she spoke about the issue to a Minnesota Fox affiliate.

"Minnesotans of every political stripe are fed up. They're exhausted with this fraud," Tafoya said. "We cannot show our children that failure comes without accountability."

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told CNN he sees Minnesota as a potential pickup opportunity for Republicans. "The one thing that gets me excited when I think about this election cycle on the map is Minnesota," Scott said. "I think Minnesota, we have a real shot with Michele Tafoya."

A GOP operative told Fox News Digital that Tafoya is seen as a candidate who can unite swing, moderate and MAGA voters in what could be a winning coalition.

What the Left Is Saying

During a debate on Minnesota Public Radio, Craig criticized Flanagan for not taking responsibility for the fraud scandal that rippled through the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. "The lieutenant governor, even as we sit here today, continues to take absolutely no accountability for any of the fraud issues, and she continues to blame the governor," Craig said. "And I'm going to be honest: It's pissing me off."

In an interview with the Minnesota Reformer, Flanagan defended her record by pointing to Gov. Tim Walz's leadership on the issue. "The governor has said that the buck stops with him, and he took the lead here," Flanagan said.

Progressive groups have rallied behind Flanagan as part of what they describe as an insurgent movement reshaping the Democratic Party from outside traditional party structures. In her victory speech Tuesday night, Flanagan instead focused on other priorities, including a vow to "rip [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] apart" following deadly shootings in Minnesota earlier this year.

What the Numbers Show

Minnesota has not elected a Republican to statewide office since 2006. Democrats have held both Senate seats continuously since 2009.

The unemployment fraud scandal involved widespread fraudulent claims processed through the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. The scandal contributed to Gov. Tim Walz dropping his re-election bid, with Flanagan continuing her own campaign for federal office.

While Minnesota is not on the NRSC's official target map of eight battleground seats, national Republicans have indicated they view the race as competitive given voter frustration over the fraud issue and Tafoya's appeal to moderate voters.

The Bottom Line

The November matchup will test whether Republicans can capitalize on Democratic vulnerabilities stemming from the unemployment fraud scandal while appealing to a broader electorate. Tafoya has sought to position herself as a candidate for all Minnesotans, including disaffected Democrats, while Flanagan enters the general election with both her progressive primary coalition and questions about her accountability during the fraud scandal that damaged Walz's candidacy.
